Narcsio Rodriguez was born in a family of Cuban parents as the eldest child. His father, Narciso Rodriguez II, was a dockworker and his mother, Ravedia Maria Rodriguez, had Spanish origins. He grew up in Newark, New Jersey. His parents did not approve of Narcsio's association with fashion. In 1979, he graduated from Saint Cecilia High School. He received his education in a new school in New York and at Parsons School of Design.

Career
Rodriguez worked as a freelance designer in New York before beginning to work for designer Anne Klein, later moving on to work for Calvin Klein. In 1997, he launched his own label. His brand gained popularity after Narciso created a wedding dress for Carolyn Bessette for her wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr.

By 2006, Rodriguez, who had ended his partnership with his label's manufacturer Aeffe, owed over $1 million to suppliers and needed donations of fabric for his spring collection.

On May 5, 2007, Liz Claiborn bought 50% of the shares in Rodriguez's label. In 2008, Rodriguez bought back the 50% ownership from Claiborn for $12 million.

On November 4, 2008, Michelle Obama wore a dress from Rodriguez's spring 2009 collection at her husband Barack Obama's first public appearance in Grant Park in Chicago. The dress was widely discussed in the media. Rodriguez was a strong supporter of Barack Obama's presidential campaign, and in August 2008, he accused Bush of causing a decline in his business.
